Intelligent grids (Smart Grids) are a set of different equipment for generation of electricity, transmission and the consumption, whose monitoring, management and control is carried out entirely by means of digital systems that allow communication to take place in both directions. This digital system allows a grid to be called intelligent in order to manage the electricity generation, transmission and consumption in the most efficient way. The main goal is to reduce losses and improving the quality of electricity, while reducing management costs of the whole process.

The benefits of building and integrating of the Smart Grids concept can be summarized within the following directions:

  • Easier connection and operation of all power sources.
  • Improved grid structure, which determines their safer performance and the availability of electricity with better quality.
  • Reduction of peak power consumption or generation, which also leads to lower electricity prices for consumers.
  • Providing customers with much more information concerning the operation of the network (grid) and the ability to participate in optimizing its performance. Possibility for automatic troubleshooting in some cases (Self-healing).
  • Less environmental impact due to reduced CO2 emissions and reduction of electricity transmission losses.
  • Ensuring that consumers use more efficiently their electricity and the opportunity to participate in the whole process, also participating as their suppliers by easily integrating their own renewable energy sources.
